5/8/2020 0 Comments Why Seneca is CorrectWhy Seneca is CorrectA lady in the Illinois state assembly, the lady is Barbara Bollier, made a request to remove expletives from a state repression of an e-book, a book intended for use by adults who are over fifty, and who still want to learn about relationships. In the e-book, someone would read quotes like 'Men should be man enough to be a man; woman enough to be a woman, and nothing under the sun', with a link to the reprepressed topic written at the end. The quotation was intended to suggest that men and women should work together and that males and females are better off together than apart.
'If these opinions are really what women believe,' she asked, 'then it's up to me to make them heard.' Bollier was elected to the state assembly, and she now represents the Chicago area. She has not only ordered her fellow legislators to take the e-book down, but she has also called for a censure motion, which can be referred to the House by the Clerk. This has upset some female legislators who have looked into censure. 'If I write my thoughts on a paper topic, do you think that will have an effect on my future job prospects?' asked Cherie Gibson. 'Will my colleagues think I'm stupid?' It appears that some men and women believe that our society has become too female dominated, and that the death of Socrates has encouraged women to think more critically, because she thinks this situation will surely end if more men begin to refuse to marry because they are unhappy in their lives and in their relationships. Some think that just as the Athenian Democracy is to blame for Socrates' demise, we must repeal the equality of all people before the law. The historical reference cited for this belief is Seneca's Letters to Lucilius. The letter was written in about the sixteenth century. He was commenting on a piece of legislation that he felt provided preferential treatment to males. He believed that the law would force men to marry because they were in poor health or because they lacked the qualities to be a successful husband and father. In most contemporary democracies, the courts do not presume to re-write the Constitution. They can interpret it in accordance with the actual intent of the framers, and what their ultimate purpose was. Should they decide that ancient Greek philosophers are right and that the Equal Protection Clause guarantees every citizen the same rights regardless of sex, then we are indeed entering an era of rare feminine equality in law. Or shall we simply live with our aging parents and senior citizens becoming increasingly unhappy with their lives? We are aware that seniors tend to be very traditional, and that this is something that most Americans do not enjoy. Just because a woman becomes elderly does not mean that she cannot play tennis and hang out with her friends. All the same, men and women should be judged on the totality of their actions, not just the parts of them that are considered appropriate by our society. Who knows? Maybe if we just get rid of Seneca's saying 'Those who cannot forgive will never forgive,' we can all get along and not have to worry about whether we are judged for our words or our actions.
